Principal Responsibilities:

The Position

The Shames JCC is seeking an extraordinary candidate to serve as our Chief Operating Officer (COO). A key member of the executive team, the COO works closely with the Executive Director and the leadership team to ensure the effective development, implementation and execution of enterprise-wide systems that support and advance the agencys operations and mission. The COO reports to the Executive Director.

The Qualifications

The COO brings to this position at least ten years of experience in program and staff management in a JCC or similar setting, with at least two years in a senior executive role. The COO must hold a BA in a relevant subject, with a preference for a graduate degree such as a MBA, MPA, MA in Operations, or other appropriate topic. The COO brings to the role skills in supervision, project management and evaluation, project planning and strategic planning, budgeting and appropriate content knowledge. Flexibility, creativity, the capacity to prioritize and multi-task and a sense of humor are all critical skills as important as strong technical and computer skills. Highly articulate with strong written and verbal skills, the COO must also attract, hire, supervise and retain a cohesive, talented staff. The COO must be passionate about the mission of the Shames JCC and prepared to contribute to the development and evolution of this mission in partnership with the Executive Director, the leadership team and the Board of Governors. Commitment to building an innovative center that serves the Jewish mission of the agency and the broader community are essential components of the position and the preferred candidate should bring experience in capacity building, problem solving, Jewish content knowledge, and an understanding of the nonprofit field and local landscape. This position requires flexible hours and the ability to plan schedule changes with appropriate advance notice.

The Harold and Elaine Shames JCC on the Hudson has served the Jewish community and its environs for almost 90 years. Currently based in Tarrytown, New York, the agency recently opened a brand new facility and is expanding its membership, facility, program and operations. Striving to enrich the greater community by offering social, recreational, educational and cultural opportunities guided by Jewish values, the Shames JCC operates youth and education programming from early childhood through high school, adult engagement programming for all ages, a health center and aquatics center, on- and off-site camping programs, special needs programs and a range of other experiences that help our members and community Move, Learn, and Connect. Supported by almost two hundred part-time and full-time staff and a cadre of volunteer leaders, the Shames JCC strives to be a center of innovative programming and a community asset that is a model for the Westchester community and beyond.
