Camp Wise, the nationally recognized Jewish overnight summer camp of the Mandel JCC of Cleveland, Ohio is known as The Home of Happiness because of its history of positively impacting the lives of children, teens, and staff for 111 years and counting. Camp Wise provides meaningful, life-changing opportunities for kids to learn and grow alongside each other while having fun as they participate in activities like canoeing, archery, sports, pottery, rock climbing, horseback riding, and much more on our 325-acre wooded campsite and private lake. Annually, Camp Wise hires a summer staff team of 150 passionate, enthusiastic, and caring individuals to create an unforgettable camp experience for our 600+ campers. While summers will be spent in Chardon, just 30 miles east of Cleveland, our year-round offices are based at the Mandel JCC, conveniently located in Beachwood, Ohio.

The Assistant Director of Programming is part of the year-round professional camp management team that creates a vision for, designs, and implements the Camp Wise experience for campers, camper families, staff members, and alumni. The Assistant Director assists in the overall management of camper recruitment and retention, year-round programming, training and development, and alumni outreach. This position requires full time residence at Camp Wise during the summer months and oversight of user groups at Camp Wise during the off-season. Typical duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Program Recruitment
  • o Plan and implement Camp Wise events for campers, staff, families, and alumni including reunions, winter overnights, Alumni reunion, Women's Weekend, Family Camp, Family Fun Day, etc. for the purposes of engagement, retention, and recruitment.

  • Summer Camp Management
  • o Schedule all necessary program area trainings and inspections to ensure all specialists have the appropriate certifications to run assigned areas

    o Oversee the development of, manage, and maintain all summer program schedules to ensure the smooth operation of the day-to-day summer camp program.

    o Manage camp program equipment and supplies including inventorying and organization before, during, and after summer.

    o Manage and maintain program areas, equipment, and inventory.

    o Conduct performance reviews and evaluation of summer supervisory staff members in program areas.

    o Supervise and manage summer staff and all programming within each program area.

    o Plan all out-of-camp experiences.

    o In collaboration with Associate Director, conduct pre-season staff interviews as determined.

    o Communicate with parents as appropriate and necessary.

    o As part of the summer senior management team, oversee the well-being and care of all campers and staff.

  • Alumni Engagement
  • o Manage year-round alumni engagement including but not limited to: social media/marketing, events, and campaigns.

  • Retreat Center
  • o Supervise on-site rental groups including food service, maintenance, and programming.

    o As needed, communicate with rental groups prior to arrival to discuss and assist with planning any programming needs in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Operations.

    o Work closely with Camp Wise Leadership Team to communicate important information prior to and during rental dates to ensure expectations of rental groups are met.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in Education, Recreation, Jewish Studies, Psychology, Social Work, or Business and three to five years of experience in operations management in a camping or similar environments and must possess strong presentation, leadership, and motivation skills.
