Principal Responsibilities:

Camp Wise, the nationally recognized Jewish overnight summer camp of the Mandel JCC of Cleveland, Ohio is known as The Home of Happiness because of its history of positively impacting the lives of children, teens, and staff for 111 years and counting. Camp Wise provides meaningful, life-changing opportunities for kids to learn and grow alongside each other while having fun as they participate in activities like canoeing, archery, sports, pottery, rock climbing, horseback riding, and much more on our 325-acre wooded campsite and private lake. Annually, Camp Wise hires a summer staff team of 150 passionate, enthusiastic, and caring individuals to create an unforgettable camp experience for our 600+ campers. While summers will be spent in Chardon, just 30 miles east of Cleveland, our year-round offices are based at the Mandel JCC, conveniently located in Beachwood, Ohio.

The Assistant Director of Operations is part of the year-round professional camp management team that creates a vision for, designs, and implements the Camp Wise experience for campers, camper families, staff members, and alumni. The Assistant Director assists in the overall management of camper recruitment and retention, year-round programming, budget supervision, marketing and PR, and training and development. This position requires full time residence at Camp Wise during the summer months and oversight of user groups at Camp Wise during the off-season. Typical duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Budget & Development
  • o Create and implement a system for all purchasing including pre-camp program area purchasing, camp gear & swag.

    o Work with Office Manager to audit CampMinder and MJCC financial systems, and produce weekly statistical reports.

    o Support Camp Director with budget management.

    o Collaborate with Camp Director and the JCC Development Staff on the creation and implementation of Camp Wise annual fundraising and giving opportunities, in-kind donations, and initiatives.

    o Serve as primary contact for service contracts & vendors.

  • Marketing & Communication
  • o Maintain an engaging and interactive online presence for current campers, including the Camp Wise website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, social media platforms, etc.

    o Implement Camp Wise communication plan.

    o Manage & maintain Camp Wise presence throughout Mandel JCC building and Jewish community.

    o Serve as key staff member to carry out yearly marketing plan using creative and innovative strategies.

  • Summer Camp Management
  • o Provide oversight for all camp programs, including Maccabiah, rainy day programming, evening programming, and other special events.

    o Manage schedule for all day camp partnerships and any other visiting groups.

    o As part of the summer senior management team, oversee the well-being and care of all campers and staff.

    o Manage camp visitors, including visitor schedule and guided tours.

  • Food Service - In-Season
  • o Serve as the liaison with international staffing organizations to manage the process of screening and hiring international kitchen staff.

    o In collaboration with the Camp Director and Infirmary Manager, manage the care of dietary needs and special meals.

    o Manage all special food requests and oversee dining hall experience and management.

  • Facility - In-Season
  • o Serve as the liaison with international staffing organizations to manage the process of screening and hiring international housekeeping staff.

    o Manage all maintenance requests and work orders.

    o Supervise housekeeping team.

  • Retreat Center
  • o Create and maintain a strong, positive Camp Wise presence in the communities served by the Mandel JCC for the purpose of attracting new rental business, retaining rental groups, and meeting annual rental goals.

    o Responsible for all pre- and post- rental and retreat center administrative duties including managing the calendar, contracts, billing, communication with group, and camp facility/food set-ups for groups.

    o Send monthly reports to the Camp Director including number of participants, revenue, and profit for each group.

    o Supervise on-site rental groups including food service, maintenance, and programming.

    o Work closely with Camp Wise Leadership Team to communicate important information prior to and during rental dates to ensure expectations of rental groups are met.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in Education, Recreation, Jewish Studies, Psychology, Social Work, or Business and three to five years of experience in operations management in a camping or similar environment and must possess strong presentation, leadership, and motivation skills.
