Principal Responsibilities:

Surprise Lake Camp is seeking to engage two creative, passionate Jewish educators for our summer season to help design and implement our Jewish learning and living experiences. SLC is proud of our legacy of excellence in camping. We blend a commitment to traditional, rustic camp experiences with state of the art recreational facilities. Our camper population comes from all over the country and even some international locations with the majority of campers based within a two-hour drive from Camp (New York City, Westchester, Long Island and New Jersey). Additionally, our campers come from many different kinds of Jewish backgrounds. Food at Camp is kosher (under supervision), Shabbat is an important part of the Camp experience including music filled tfillot on Friday night and Shabbat morning. Israel is a vital element of the SLC experience and SLC engages a mishlachat of schlichim each summer who play a central role on our staff. In addition to all this, our campers take part in Jewish learning and living activities that include Jewish text and Jewish tradition in a way that allows them to build their understanding of Jewish community, create connections and find meaning. SLC is proud of our B'nai Mitzvah program in which campers elect to celebrate becoming bar or bat mitzvah at camp

Minimum Qualifications:

Responsibilities: Serve as a "central address," for Jewish living and learning at camp; Partner with camp staff to infuse Jewish learning into varied aspects of camp life;

Work with campers who are participating in our elective b'nai mitzvah program; Plan and lead Shabbat services; Create and facilitate engaging Jewish living and learning experiences for campers of diverse Jewish backgrounds; Attend pre-camp preparations, training, and orientation and be in residence for the entire summer season.

Qualities and Experience: Background in Jewish education (graduate level training preferred); Experience with Jewish overnight camps; Ability to work effectively with campers, counselors, and senior staff; Capable of and interested in working in a diverse Jewish setting; Knowledgeable and skilled in experiential education; Ability to play guitar and / or song-lead preferred; Knowledge of Hebrew preferred; Experience having spent significant time in Israel preferred.
