Principal Responsibilities:

Get to know the Y After School Programs: Be Me: After School Program at the Y is an inclusive program for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. At Be Me, we welcome families and participants to come and celebrate their Jewish heritage and culture while engaging in fun activities.

Y After School Program at Columbia Secondary School serves students in the sixth through tenth grade. The program is focused on leadership, STEM, Social Emotional Learning, community service and academics. Students engage in weekly hikes, gardening initiatives, STEM activities, job shadowing and college readiness programs.

Y After School Program at Harbor Heights Middle School serves recent arrivals from Spanish-speaking countries. The program is focused on leadership, STEM and academics with students in the sixth through eigth grade. Students engage in beat building, sports, theater, LitMentors, public service announcements, art and cooking.

Summary: The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) specialist's primary concern is the improvement of learning opportunities for students attending the YM & YWHA After School Program. The STEM Specialist is an on-site instructional facilitator who works under the supervision of the Program Director and Educational Specialist to deliver age-appropriate, hands-on scientific curricula and thematic projects related to STEM disciplines. Core responsibilities:

 Facilitate hands on, curriculum based instruction to small groups of students

 Work closely with Program Director and Educational Specialist to ensure thematic projects support school day STEM instruction and align to Common Core Standards

 Assess the effectiveness and success of the curriculum and recommend changes based on student performance to the Program Director and Education Specialist

 Coordinate the administration and implementation of STEM projects, culminating events and educational trips

 Oversee creation and collection of student work (i.e. student portfolios, presentations, project boards)

 Participate and co-facilitate STEM trainings at site and Y main office

 Plans lessons, projects and units for use in the after school program and ensure the successful execution and implementation of these plans.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 Broad knowledge of Science Technology, Engineering and Math disciplines and instructional strategies

 Understanding and experience of education in an urban setting

 Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, families and school partners including school administration and staff

 Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills


Required Education and Experience:

 DOE Teaching Certification

 Bachelors Degree in Education and/or Science; Master's strongly preferred

 Three years classroom experience in an urban setting

 Proven track record of success in the classroom

 Experience working with children of multiple intelligences and differentiated learning styles

 Must pass pre-employment background investigation including but not limited to fingerprinting, employment history, and criminal background check.
