About the Michael-Ann Russell JCC

Since 1976, the MAR JCC has been and continues to be the Jewish community's central address in North Miami-Dade County for meeting the social, recreational and cultural needs of the Jewish community. The MARJCC operates on a $12.4 million annual budget, and owns five beautiful buildings totaling 130,000+ sq. ft. that sits prominently on 17.5 acres of land. The MARJCC currently enjoys 2,000 units of membership representing over 7,000 people and is growing. The MARJCC has a talented staff of 75 full-time employees representing 12-15 different departments, with committed lay leadership and outstanding programming.

In addition to the diverse menu of classes, programs, workshops, sports leagues, clinics and special events that are offered, combined with a highly regarded health and wellness center, MAR JCC is becoming more than a hub for activity, but a social hub as well. The kosher Subway has become a popular gathering place for those who wish to sit and socialize over a sandwich. Elsie's Cafe and the Waxman Family Deck, the Kablisky Lounge, the Alter Assor Indoor Play Area, and the Finvarb Park provide numerous gathering points for friends and families. The JCC is dedicated to the well-being of people of all ages and faiths, and is inclusive of individuals, their families and the greater North Miami-Dade community.

The MARJCC strives to maintain the highest standards of programming, and offers classes, services and events that are contemporary and effective, yet grounded in traditional Judaic values. This includes a thriving preschool, a fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment and a full complement of group exercise classes, two pools including an indoor and an outdoor pool, creative after-school activities for school age children, a renowned cultural arts program including film, theater, music, dance and educational forums (which will be housed, by the end of this year, in a brand new 40,000 sq. ft. cultural arts building), and a robust series of programs for adults and senior adults. Support for Israel and programs to engage the community with Israel is a hallmark of this JCC. There is a strong relationship with their partnership city of Yerucham in Israel. Involving the Israeli community and weaving Israel into the fabric of the MARJCC is an important goal. One of the unique aspects of MARJCC programming is Hebraica, which emphasizes the importance of promoting Jewish identity, Jewish values, a love of Israel, and the importance of family and community. Hebraica reaches out to all segments of the diverse Jewish community through ongoing programs for Jewish children, tweens, teens, and college-age young adults, and includes holiday celebrations, family activities, and community events. Most of the participants in Hebraica come from Latin American backgrounds.

About the North Miami Beach Jewish Community

While the JCC is located in North Miami Beach (Jewish population: 44,000), many of its members reside in neighboring Aventura (Jewish population: 38,000 with 48% foreign born), Hallandale (Jewish population: 39,500), Sunny Isles & Golden Beach (Jewish population: 14,000) and Skylake/Ojus (Jewish population: 17,000). This is the second most densely populated Jewish community in the U.S. It is a very diverse, connected, engaged and active community. This JCC has a significant percentage of Latin American families, as well as a growing number of Israeli families (for reference, the Scheck Hillel Community School next door has only 23% American-born parents). Immigration has changed the make-up, expectations and needs of the community, as these families were involved in their JCCs in their country of origin. Having experience with multicultural environments, having lived in Latin America or Israel, and/or speaking Spanish and/or Hebrew would be a plus for an incoming CEO. It is home to 14 different synagogues of all denominations, and 12 different day schools. The JCC has an excellent relationship with the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, the two other JCCs in greater Miami and the United Way of Miami Dade.

About the Greater Miami Area

More than a half million Jews live in three counties of So. Florida - Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach - making it the third largest Jewish metropolitan area in the U.S. behind only New York and L.A. Greater Miami has a population of 5.5 million people. Miami is an international city at Florida's southeastern tip. Its Cuban influence is reflected in the cafes and cigar shops in Little Havana. On barrier islands across the turquoise waters of Biscayne Bay is Miami Beach, home to South Beach, famed for its colorful art deco buildings, white sand, surfside hotels and trendsetting nightclubs. Greater Miami is a vacation destination year round for vacationers from all over the world.

Arts and culture thrive in Greater Miami, reflecting the diversity of its population. The Adrienne Arscht Center for the Arts, Perez Art Museum, and Art Basel are key examples. It is home to five major sports teams, including the Miami Dolphins football team, the Miami Heat basketball team, the Miami Marlins baseball team, Miami FC soccer team and further north in Broward County, the Florida Panthers hockey team. Greater Miami and its beaches are a paradise of interconnected oceanfront cities, urban hubs, charming villages and tropical parks. The University of Miami and Florida International University are two of many highly regarded educational institutions in south Florida. There are many family-centered attractions and senior-friendly facilities. The weather is very warm in the summer months and very mild in the winter.

The Michael-Ann Russell (MAR) JCC represents a model of acceptance, understanding, and diversity. As such, people look at the MAR-JCC as a center of excellence that epitomizes how shared Jewish values support a vibrant, diverse and evolving constituency. The mission of the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center/Sanford L. Ziff Campus is dedicated to the enrichment of Jewish life and fosters the spiritual, emotional, and physical development of its individual members through all of life's stages and circumstances. The JCC seeks a CEO who is an energetic, visionary, and passionate leader; a professional who possesses excellent strategic and management skills with a proven track record in financial management and community building. The CEO will build on the successes of the past while enabling the JCC to enter a new era in meeting current and future opportunities. The CEO must be skilled at developing and leading a staff team as well as a cadre of devoted volunteer leaders.

The CEO must be a highly accomplished relationship builder, comfortable with all levels of constituencies from the most seasoned lay leaders to new young leadership, professional staff colleagues and those not yet engaged. A forward thinking, energetic individual, the CEO will promote a culture of innovation, drive the key businesses of the JCC and be a change agent to create on-going excitement and excellence for the JCC in the community.

The CEO provides leadership to all aspects of the JCC operations and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the JCC. This includes an understanding of the physical plant, technical support systems and running the various businesses of the JCC. Visibility and responsiveness to members is a strong value. The CEO will be decisive in action, adaptable and accountable.

Exhibits Skill in Fiscal Management

The CEO must plan for financial stability and sustainability in partnership with the CFO and the finance and audit committees. A key to this is having the knowledge of financial systems, the ability to establish and maintain a realistic budget, and the aptitude to use timely financial statements to guide and oversee agency performance.

The CEO will create a culture of positivity and productivity in the work environment, inspiring, engaging and empowering the professional staff of the JCC. Through selecting, developing and motivating staff, the CEO will foster innovation, teamwork and collaboration to ensure that best practices and cutting edge developments are the norm.

Presents Visionary and Strategic Leadership

The CEO will promote an all-encompassing and compelling vision that captures the energy of the JCC and represents the strategic planning and priorities as determined by the Board, as well as carves out a path for a more robust, engaged and involved community going forward. The CEO will actively engage with other Jewish and general community organizations, working to support existing collaborative programs and to envision new ways to work together. The CEO must see the big picture - managing current issues while thinking long term.

Proven Ability in Fundraising and Resource Development

The CEO must engage and steward donors, and seek gifts of significance. Entrepreneurial and attuned to donor interests and concerns, the CEO will direct cutting edge practices in donor development to enhance and improve the community's potential. Highly visible in the community, the CEO will reach out and cultivate new potential donors at all levels.
