Principal Responsibilities:

The Executive Director of the Shaw JCC will be a visionary leader who possesses excellent strategic communication and managerial skills, strong intellect, and is a passionate advocate of the JCC and its mission. This individual, who will report to the CEO of the Jewish Community Board of Akron, will partner with the Board of Directors of the Shaw JCC and its staff to cultivate strong ties between the JCC, its members, donors, and key stakeholders. The Executive Director provides leadership to all aspects of JCC operations and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the JCC, keeping it strong and positioning it for the future. This individual supports and enables staff and volunteers to carry out programs in keeping with the vision, policies and goals established by the JCC's Board of Directors. Critical to the success of the Shaw JCC and the Executive Director are the following:

Management Skills

  1. Ability to delegate responsibilities to staff and monitor staff performance
  2. Understands the business of the JCC including its core businesses
  3. Knowledgeable in the areas of marketing and branding
  4. Decisive in action and accountability
  5. Demonstrates adaptability with calculated risk taking
  6. Supports staff initiative and innovation and creates and maintains team/family atmosphere
  7. Demonstrates knowledge of non-profit management

Staff Management

  1. Ability to motivate and inspire others to create a dynamic and high performing team
  2. Ability to attract and retain high quality staff members to the JCC team
  3. Mentors and fosters the growth of junior, less experienced staff
  4. Provides positive and constructive feedback to staff
  5. Challenges and coach the staff to be the best they can be at their jobs

Program and Service Development

  1. Ability to give broad direction to the JCCs program strategy and vision
  2. Knowledge of JCC programs and services
  3. Understands how to determine the program needs of the JCC membership
  4. Ability to work with staff in program development, oversight, and evaluation

Planning and Strategic Thinking

  1. Manages current issues while planning for and facilitating long term strategies for the JCC
  2. Understands the effect of the changing demographics of the Akron Jewish community on the JCC, its programs, financial sustainability, and future operations
  3. Enables staff and appropriate committees to assess, evaluate, and enhance current programs to meet on-going needs
  4. Continues a culture of innovation and risk-taking to create new, cutting edge programs and services that meet the needs of the current and next generation of JCC members
  5. Continues to develop strategic and collaborative alliances with the synagogues and the other Jewish communal agencies
  6. Identifies key strategic opportunities

Financial Management

  1. Establishes and maintains a realistic budget
  2. Partners with the community CFO as well as the lay leadership in finance
  3. Knowledge of the JCCs financial system
  4. Commitment to plan for future financial sustainability

Leadership and Vision

  1. Projects an executive presence, commanding attention and respect in groups
  2. Community and relationship builder gaining support and alliances from others
  3. Identifies key opportunities and recognizes implications of issues
  4. Strong verbal and communication skills as well as listening skills
  5. Creates an environment in which future leaders are identified, motivated, developed, and mentored

Other Skills and Qualities

  1. A strong Jewish background including knowledge and understanding of Jewish culture, traditions, and values and a commitment to the enhancement of Jewish life
  2. A commitment to the mission, vision, and branding of the JCC
  3. Outgoing, people-oriented, and enthusiastic about establishing a Jewish and general community presence
  4. Committed, organized, and able to set clear vision and priorities
  5. Understands and builds strengths while reducing challenges facing the JCC
  6. Proposes direction for changes after evaluation of programs and facility
  7. Demonstrated ability to utilize and embrace latest strategies in communication, marketing, promotion, etc., such as social media and other targeted communication techniques

On a budget of $4.3 million, JCC program and services include an early learning center, summer day camp, indoor and outdoor aquatics facilities, fitness center, and gym as well as extensive meeting facilities. The 85,000 square foot JCC facility is located on a beautiful expansive campus. the JCC shares space with The Lippman Academy, Jewish Family Services, The Jewish Community Board of Akron, Beth El Synagogue as well as a Summa Health Rehabilitation and Therapy Center.

Akron is the fifth largest city in Ohio. It offers its residents a reasonable cost of living, an excellent healthcare system, professional sports teams, access to several universities, and close proximity to Cleveland with its many cultural attractions.
