The J of Metropolitan Detroit is looking for someone with limitless camp energy to be our next Day Camp Director! The J Day Camp is the number one Jewish day camp in Southeast Michigan. Join our creative, effective, and fast-moving team of professionals with plans to grow Camp into the future. Our ideal Camp Director is strategic, creative, and entrepreneurial with expert relationship-building skills and an insatiable enthusiasm for camp.
Responsibilities
Leadership and Strategy
- Champion the spirit and mission of The J
- Partner with colleagues in a variety of roles to create and implement a forward-thinking vision for year-round engagement at The J
- Maintain and grow The J's reputation as a leader in the day camp field
- Continue to build relationships with our partners in the field to further our strategic plans
Building Programs
- Develop and implement a year-round communication and stewardship plan for Camp families and prospective Camp families
- Maintain an inclusive camp environment for campers and staff, rooted in Jewish tradition and values
- Continue to align Camp with growth in relevant markets
- Work with program colleagues to develop a dynamic portfolio of engagement opportunities throughout the year, including the Child Development Center and JFamily
- Proactively research and assess trends, community needs, and opportunities for growth and expansion
- Continuously evaluate the effectiveness and quality of existing programs
Operations
- Work with Executive leadership to develop and manage a budget reflective of The J's targets
- Support Camp leadership team in all day-to-day operations of camp and year-round programming
- Ensure compliance with all licensing and accreditation requirements and make certain that all program environments are safe, secure, and clean
- Research, write, oversee and implement any grants received
- Work with Executive leadership and Development team to develop and execute fundraising strategies
Supporting the Team
- Build, lead, and inspire a team of talented year-round and young adult seasonal staff that work together effectively and efficiently to meet the goals of Camp and the needs of the community
- Strengthen and maintain a culture that is aligned with Camp's core values
- Develop and implement plans for annual seasonal staff recruitment
- Plan and lead all Camp staff meetings and trainings throughout the year
- Provide year-round and seasonal staff with feedback and evaluation
Building Relationships
- Provide compassionate, timely, and responsive communication to families and partners in the community to ensure the highest level of customer service
- Continuously identify new opportunities for family engagement, both in person, and in partnership with The J's Marketing team
- Proactively identify and respond to challenges or questions related to camper and staff experience with empathy and emotional intelligence
- Architect a community where children, parents, and staff feel physically and emotionally safe, included, and accepted
Minimum Qualifications:
Requirements and Skills
- Insatiable enthusiasm for camp
- Ability to hold the big picture while supporting the team in tasks big and small
- High level of empathy and emotional intelligence
- Excellent executive functioning - communication, prioritization, and organization
- Proven ability to communicate, problem solve, and resolve conflicts with children, parents, and young adults
- Experience in a leadership position that may include:
- Supervising and supporting staff and young adults
- Budget development and implementation
- Fundraising
- Inspiring and activating lay leaders
- Personal connection, experience, and knowledge - or willingness to learn - about Jewish traditions, values, and culture
- Experience with and a passion for working with children, teens, young adults, and individuals with special needs
- Ability to work in a physically demanding outdoor environment
- Ability to negotiate and deescalate in an emotional environment
- Flexibility to work irregular hours, particularly during the summer months, with occasional evening and weekend obligations
- Physical ability and emotional wisdom to act swiftly and appropriately in a crisis or emergency
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, Camp Minder, and other communication platforms used for communication and marketing
Salary:
$85,000 - $95,000
