Principal Responsibilities:
A swim support counselor is someone who will help further maintain safety at the pool with campers. When swimming with camp groups, it will be the responsibility of the Swim Counselor to maintain the proper ratio in the pool as well on the pool deck. This person will be the camp liaison between pool and camp staff. Note that this position requires a commitment for the entire season of June 6th - July 29th, as well as Staff Orientation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure the safety of all swimmers and pool areas
- Supervise and monitor all pool activities
- Exhibit professional behavior at all times
- Be fully engaged in monitoring pool area
- Communicate effectively with lifeguards, counselors, and campers in the pool areas
- Maintain open communication with Director and/or Assistant Director regarding pool updates and concerns
- Attend and actively participate in Staff trainings
- Other duties as assigned
- Follow all mandated safety guidelines related to social distancing, hygiene and PPE;
- Know, understand and be able to implement ALL emergency procedures associated with the summer camp program;
- Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the summer camp and all program areas.This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers' safety, health & well being, and their whereabouts at all times;
- Use sound judgement in all situations;
- Model the behavior you expect of campers
- Be available to work hours between 8 am - 5 pm.
- Proactively identify and respond to participant behavior issues;
- Immediately alert Director and/or Assistant Director when camper behavioral issues escalate
- Exemplify JCC Internal Service standards of respect, gratitude, communication, the golden rule, and ownership/accountability.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualifications, Skills & Experience:
- Upon hire, certified CPR/First Aid/AED from American Red Cross
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Strong swimming skills
- Ability to see and hear campers, alert staff and communicate effectively
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
- Must haves: ability to swim, excellent interpersonal skills, resiliency, and a can-do attitude;
- Flexible, adaptive and a team player;
- Extended exposure to sunlight and outdoor elements as well as warm and humid indoor environment is expected.
- Position works independently and without supervision for long periods of time.
- Must possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of children;
- Must have visual and auditory ability to keep track of multiple children and to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to program activities;
- Strong organizational and time management skills;
- Demonstrated skills in conflict mediation;
- Upon hire, completion of First Aid and CPR certification;
- Ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities;
- Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks without constant supervision;
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interact with diverse groups of campers, parents and staff;
- Prior experience in a leadership position working with children.
