Principal Responsibilities:
The Assistant Camp Director supports the Camp Director in the daily operation and overall success of The Day Camps at the J. This role requires a dynamic, highly visible leader who serves as the energetic face of daily camp operations. The ideal candidate is a charismatic presence who drives camp spirit, ensures every camper feels valued, and cultivates a vibrant, enthusiastic community.
Alongside leading the camp's culture and energy during the summer, the Assistant Director plays a vital role in year-round JCC youth and family programming. They ensure the safety, supervision, and well-being of youth across all programs, providing guidance and support to staff, and ensuring activities are engaging, well-planned, and implemented effectively within a safe and inclusive environment.

Essential Responsibilities
Camp Culture & Community Engagement
- Visible Leadership: Serve as the primary, high-energy ambassador for the camp's daily operations, greeting campers and families each morning with enthusiasm to set a positive, welcoming tone.
- Program Energy: Lead the daily "Boker Tov" (the camp's morning lineup), utilizing strong public speaking and interactive skills to energize the camp community through announcements, songs, and community-building initiatives.
- Camper Experience: Act as an engaging, approachable presence across the campus, interacting with individual campers to ensure every child feels special, seen, and connected to the program.
- Shabbat Programming: Assist with the planning and facilitation of Friday Shabbat celebrations, creating a meaningful, joyous, and cohesive end-of-week experience for campers and staff.
Daily Operations & Program Management
- Floor Operations: Assist with the daily management and on-the-ground coordination of camp operations, directly supporting program specialists and seasonal staff.
- Leadership Coverage: Provide comprehensive oversight of camp operations and staff management in the absence of the Camp Director.
- Field Trip Coordination: Oversee and coordinate off-site field trips, ensuring strict adherence to camper safety, organizational logistics, and smooth transitions.
- Activity Oversight: Ensure weekly activity plans and schedules are developed, approved, and executed effectively to maximize camper engagement.
- Resource Management: Anticipate operational needs and submit supply requests to the Camp Director in a timely manner.
Staff & Camper Support
- Professional Modeling: Serve as a consistently positive role model for campers and staff, demonstrating responsibility, dependability, patience, punctuality, and integrity.
- Behavioral Management: Assist in managing camper and staff behavioral concerns with sound judgment, professionalism, and supportive intervention strategies.
- Developmental Care: Support seasonal staff in meeting the emotional, social, physical, and developmental needs of each camper.
- Safety & Compliance: Maintain a safe, healthy, and inclusive environment at all times. Strictly follow all mandated reporting procedures and report any suspected abuse immediately.
- Communication: Maintain clear, responsive, and professional communication with campers, parents/guardians, staff, and supervisors, both verbally and in writing.
Year-Round & Off-Season Duties
- Youth & Family Events: Play a lead role in the planning, coordination, and execution of year-round JCC Youth and Family Events (primarily occurring on weekends).
- Middle School & Vacation Programs: Actively manage and run JCC Middle School programming and Vacation Day programs (during school closures), maintaining the high-energy, engaging environment established during the summer.
- Peak Season Culmination: Take a lead operational role in executing the end-of-season Family Fun Carnival in September.
- Staff Recruitment: Assist the Camp Director with the year-round recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding of seasonal summer staff.
- Program Development: Collaborate on the off-season planning of summer programming, daily schedules, and specialty activities.
- Community Outreach: Support marketing and enrollment initiatives by representing The Day Camps at the J at open houses, community events, and year-round promotional activities.
